Gorillas - Uganda
-
It was in June 2019 when I arrived in Uganda for a 10-day visit. I booked three attempts up into the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, where I set out to observe the Gorillas in their natural habitat. There, I met and photographed three different Gorilla families: The Busingne Group, the Mishaya Group, and the X-Mass Group.
These mountain gorillas, I quickly learned, are on the brink of extinction — and belong to a worldwide population of just 800. The gorillas had slowly adjusted to the presence of other humans, but were by no means domesticated. I knew what a privilege it would be to lock eyes with at least one of these magnificent creatures.
Fascinating animals that, despite our presence, take advantage of the time to play in the bushes while the Silverback, the father of all of them and the protector, does not lose sight of them. Mothers also protect newborns with great care and attention
In retrospect, it was one of my best travel experiences. I part of 10-person expedition, led by 2 experienced rangers at the front. The rangers cut branches in the jungle as we tracked the Gorillas; explaining that there wasn’t a clear path because the Gorillas move in a different direction every day.
The second time we ascended the mountain, we were met with heavy storms and lightning — which meant the path was muddy and slippery. In the end, we trekked for about 7 hours; but the reward was seeing a group of Mishaya Gorillas (who, incidentally, were also waiting for the rain to subside).
For this unforgettable experience, I’d first like to thank Edson Nyatanyi, who drove me all over the area, and his family — who I’ve come to know as my friends. A big thank you to the people from Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge, especially Monday and his family who assisted me every day; in preparing my meals, water, and supplies for my mountain treks. A big thank you as well to Nelly the Labrador for her company during my downtime.
Lastly, I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have met the lovely kids from Nkuringo Orphanage who shared their time with me, dancing and singing beautiful local songs.
