Galapagos Island
-
First, I arrive in Guayaquil, Ecuador before flying to the Galápagos Islands. I spent two weeks onboard the “Camila” cruise. The schedule consisted of two island visits per day, and spending three hours with a guide that tells us about the history of each island.
In between visits, they gave us the option to kayak and snorkel; and spot tropical fish, turtles, and stingrays. One notable highlight was snorkelling with some very friendly sea lions; who confidently approached us and played with my camera.
Among the animals sighted on my trip were lava lizards, pink flamingos that live in saltwater lagoons, hawks, red-footed boobies and swallow-tailed gulls, marine and land iguanas, pelicans, giant tortoises, mockingbirds, yellow warblers birds, blue footed boobies and frigate birds, a nesting colony of the Flightless Cormorant Waved Albatross, Galapagos penguins, sea lions, and crabs.
The dramatic landscape boasted beaches of red-hot lava, rocky cliffs everywhere, and coastal, arid vegetation. I saw the Sierra Negra and Cerro Azul volcanos, and visited thirteen islands in total — with my favourites being Genovesa for the sea lions and Santiago Island because their lava fields.
